A tech start-up Neurable is ready to merge virtual with reality as its at the moment developing a brain-computer interface, BCI, for a host of the virtual application.
Neurable currently has a demo game called Awakening, where the player is fitted with a VR headset electrodes attached to their head, and assume the role of a child with telekinetic powers, and locked up in a research facility and must use these powers as a tool to facilitate an escape.
The BCI system allows a player to move objects within the VR game using just their thoughts, like telekinesis. This is achievable by combining the HTC Vive virtual-reality headset and some dry electrodes placed on the player’s scalp to detect brain activity through electroencephalography.
The system requires a short calibration process to become familiar with the thoughts of the player, Neurable, however, promises an improvement which would allow a pickup and plays.
Neurable is currently looking beyond video games for the BCI, a promotional video by the company showed people controlling a small car with their minds. This could make the system more useful for complicated design programs.
At the moment, the BCI systems are needed to be implanted into the head of the user, and this has been a challenge for the BCI. The Neurable team is working towards having functional dry electrodes that would be worn like a hat. This would be helpful to a person with mobility problem or motor neuron conditions as the BCI system would be used to communicate or controlled things by them.
Neurable hopes to complete work on Awakening and a larger gaming company will pick up and release it next year.
